Each year, the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce awards an “Arts & Culture Advocate Award” that is part of their “Spirit of Our Community” Awards.

The individual or business that receives this award demonstrates how their work promotes artistic enhancement or cultural awareness in the community.

The 2017 recipients were Southwestern Community College’s very own educational opportunities coordinator Kay Wolf and the English Language Learners Team.

The winners of the awards were announced on Nov. 16, 2017.

“I am very honored to be awarded this recognition, but we do this work for the English Language Learners,” said Wolf. “I would like to thank all the partners involved who have helped make this project a success. The English Language students are so eager to learn and so appreciative of all our efforts.”

SCC collaborates with the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd and the United Methodist Church of Cashiers to offer English classes for adults in the community needing to learn the language by providing the instructors and the free curriculum through the college’s educational opportunities department.

The classes are held at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, with volunteers from both churches working with the children of the adults taking the English classes.

More than 35 people have attended the classes since last fall.

Rob Wood of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd nominated Wolf for the award.
