For the second year in a row, the “Ducks on the Tuck” fundraiser was held virtually this spring.

As in the past, all proceeds go toward the New Century Scholars program – helping students in Jackson, Macon and Swain Counties to attain their college education.

One major difference this spring: Macon County raised the most money and took home the Ducks on the Tuck Trophy – avenging last year’s narrow loss to Jackson County. Dr. Don Tomas, President of SCC, presented the trophy to Dr. Chris Baldwin, Macon County Schools Superintendent on May 23.

“Macon County is grateful for the New Century Scholars program,” Dr. Baldwin said. “We are excited to be recognized for our support of a program that has helped so many young people in our region achieve their educational goals.”

The “Duck Draw Raffle” grand prize – a 49-inch LED Insignia flat-screen television – went to Sebastian Lemmons of Franklin. Lemmons’ younger sister is a New Century Scholar: Sophia Rose Waters of Macon Middle School.

The TV Lemmons won was donated by Custom Sound and Security of Franklin.

More than 45 other prizes – all donated by local businesses - were up for grabs in this year’s fundraiser, which was held on May 11.

“Every single year, the people of Jackson, Macon and Swain Counties step up big-time to support this program,” Dr. Tomas said. “We’re extremely grateful to everyone who supports New Century Scholars year after year, and we also appreciate everyone who bought a ‘Ducks on the Tuck’ ticket for the first time. Their generosity will touch many young students’ lives over the years ahead.”

Established in 1995 by Dr. Charles McConnell, former Jackson County superintendent, and then-SCC president Dr. Barry Russell, New Century Scholars provides last-dollar tuition assistance and extra support such as dedicated advising to deserving area students.

New Century Scholars has served more than 2,200 students over the years. At present, 286 students participate in grades 7-12, and 167 attended SCC this spring as adult students.

Funding is provided through private donations, fundraisers and NCS endowments.
