A free laptop would be a welcome addition into most any household at any time.

But for Amy Poirier, winning a new computer could not have come at a better moment than when she was wrapping up her studies this past spring at Southwestern Community College.

Donated by three Drake Enterprises entities (The Boiler Room, Fun Factory and Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts), the Dell Inspiron 15 was the grand prize for SCC’s career seminar series – an effort to prepare students for job searches and professional success. Students had to attend at least two of the seminars to be eligible for the drawing.

“I’m so appreciative to Drake and SCC,” said Poirier, an Otto resident who graduated magna cum laude in May with a 3.71 grade point average in health information technology.

“The laptop came at a great time for me,” Poirier added. “My old computer had a virus, and I really needed this to finish my last semester of school. Plus, I had never won anything before.”

Drake donated the laptop to the SCC Foundation, which awarded it to Poirier when her name was drawn at the final seminar – a presentation by speaker, trainer and certified etiquette and protocol consultant Cecilia Budd Grimes.

Other local businesses who supported the seminar series by donating prizes were: Andy Shaw Ford, Bogart's, Indulgence Salon, Krismart, Lucio's, Silver Treasures, Skincare Solutions, Tips and Toes and Walmart.

“SCC greatly appreciates the generous support for our seminar series, which offers our students the opportunity to learn the skills needed for professional success,” said Patty Kirkley, career counselor at SCC.
