Although a number of initiatives have drawn attention to the need for equity in STEM education, gaps persist in student access to educational and occupational opportunities related to STEM.  In this interactive session, we will explore the current STEM context, including policy and research, and will consider how rethinking our classroom and outreach practices can impact students’ STEM interests and outcomes.  Participants will receive practical strategies for their own use and will learn about a variety of resources to use with students and the community.  This session has been funded by and is offered in conjunction with the Smoky Mountains STEM Collaborative.

Learning Objectives:

  • Consider the current STEM context in the region
  • Identify resources for engaging in STEM teaching or engagement
  • Reflect on issues related to equity in their classrooms or outreach activities
