Five graduates of Southwestern Community College’s Human Services Technology (HST) program were honored during a pinning ceremony on Dec. 16 at the Jackson Campus.

Leigh Mashon Gaddis of Cullowhee, Sarah E. McKinney of Cullowhee and Carrie Jo Shuler of Webster have completed their associate degrees in HST.

Zada L. Lail of Sylva earned her associate degree in HST-Substance Abuse along with certificates in HST and HST-Substance AbuseTreatment.

John Michael Middleton of Sylva finished his certificate in HST.

“I may be biased, but it really feels like life seems to happen to students while they’re coming through our program,” said Lori Clancy, who serves as HST and HST-Substance Abuse Treatment program coordinator. “This group was no exception. All five of these graduates had to work through some very trying times in their personal lives while they were with us, but I could not be more proud of how each of them persevered. I know that wherever they go and whatever they do, these graduates have all the skills, knowledge and persistence they need to be successful.”

Graduates of the program quality for positions in mental health, child care, social services and other similar agencies. They may also opt to continue their education and pursue a bachelor’s degree in Social Work.
