A year ago, dozens of public safety agencies from throughout – and beyond – Western North Carolina brought impressive life-saving equipment to display at Southwestern Community College’s inaugural Hometown Heroes Career Fair.
Military equipment and fire trucks as well as all manner of emergency, rescue and law enforcement vehicles were on hand – and aircraft flyovers were also planned.
The only hitch: Weather forecasts moved much of the festivities indoors.
This year, organizers are planning an even bigger party – and hoping the weather will cooperate for a few critical hours on April 10. The event is scheduled for 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. on SCC’s Jackson Campus.
And even if weather forecasts aren’t favorable, SCC’s team has a plan in place to make this year’s career fair even better than last year’s. Hometown Heroes is a career and resource fair for anyone interested in the military, law enforcement, fire/medical first responders, emergency and disaster response.
“We have two primary goals with this event,” said Mike Despeaux, SCC’s Director of Career Services and Hometown Heroes coordinator. “We want to shine the spotlight on and honor all of the heroes who stand on the frontlines protecting us every day, and we want to help connect our students and everyone in the region with opportunities to enter these noble professions as well.”
Representatives from all branches of the U.S. Military, as well as all community departments representing all areas of public safety (firefighters, law enforcement, rescue and emergency workers) will be available to show off the equipment and vehicles they used on a daily basis – and also to sign up the next generation of hometown heroes.
