During the fall semester, Swain County residents Cynthia Womble and Toby Allman have been appointed to – and sworn in as members of – Southwestern Community College’s Board of Trustees.
Appointed by the Swain County Board of Commissioners, Womble joined SCC’s board on Sept. 6. Her term runs through June 30, 2026.
A native of Wilson, Womble earned a master’s degree in Operations Research from the Navy Postgraduate School, a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College and is a graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College. She also holds a degree in Industrial Engineering from N.C. State.
She retired as a Captain from the U.S. Navy in 2017 following a 28-year career – the final 15 in Human Resources. Among her assignments were Deputy Director of Human Resources for the U.S. Fleet Forces Command, Commanding Officer of the Navy Manpower Analysis Center, on the Joint Staff, Navy staff and Navy Personnel Command.
Since moving to Bryson City after her military service, Womble has been an active volunteer and leader in community nonprofits. She serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Fontana Regional Library system and Vice Chair on the Advisory Board for Marianna Black Library. She and her husband, Thomas Womble, have one son.
“We’re pleased to welcome Mrs. Womble and Mr. Allman to our Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Don Tomas, SCC’s President. “Each of them brings a unique perspective to the table, and I look forward to working with them and the rest of our board to continue or work of ensuring we do everything we can to promote student success.”
Allman was sworn in on Nov. 19. He holds three degrees from SCC: Accounting, Business Administration and Associate in Arts.
He’s currently the owner of Smoky Mountain Accounting & Tax Service in Bryson City, and he’s been an accountant for 30 years.
Over the years, he’s served on boards for various community organizations, including the Rotary Club of Bryson City. He served on the Rotary District 7670 Finance Committee and also as treasurer.
He is married to Judy Allman and has two stepsons and three grandsons.
Allman’s term on SCC’s board will run through June 30, 2028.
