Elizabeth (Betty) Waldroop (center) is the niece of Charles Siler Slagle, a founding member of SCC’s Board of Trustees. The newest member of SCC’s Board of Trustees, Waldroop is pictured between her cousin Kathy Tinsley (left) and her sister Mary Pittman. They’re pictured here with a plaque commemorating Mr. Slagle’s service in the board room that bears his name on Southwestern’s Jackson Campus in Sylva.

Elizabeth (Betty) Waldroop’s ties to Southwestern Community College go way back to the very beginning, and they run deep.

Her uncle, Charles Siler Slagle, was a founding member of Southwestern’s Board of Trustees. He served on the board from 1968 through 1996, including time as chair, and the board room in SCC’s Burrell Building is named in his honor.

He even encouraged Waldroop to enroll at Southwestern in the 1970s, and she did exactly that – graduating from the Paralegal program in 1976 when the institution went by the name “Southwestern Technical Institute.”

Last month, she started a new chapter at Southwestern – this time as a member of the Board of Trustees. A Macon County resident, she was appointed by Gov. Roy Cooper.

“Since graduating from Southwestern, I have seen a lot of change in the campuses and programs that are offered,” Waldroop said. “It’s grown a tremendous amount, adding a campus in Macon County and new buildings in Jackson County. The college is always interested in expanding to provide programs and licensure programs. I’m pleased to see that. SCC provides great service to the Jackson, Macon and Swain Counties as well as the Qualla Boundary, and I look forward to serving on the board.”

In addition to her education at Southwestern, Waldroop holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Western Carolina University. She worked for Macon County Schools as a teacher and administrator for a total of 29 years.

She previously served as a member of the Macon County Planning Board, and she is currently the chair for the Farm Service Agency County Office Committee. She is also treasurer for the Kids Place Child Advocacy Center.

“We’re pleased to have Betty Waldroop joining our Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Don Tomas, SCC President. “Her extensive background in education and her bonds to Southwestern give her a very strong perspective, so we are glad she has agreed to serve in this capacity.”

Waldroop’s current term on Southwestern’s Board of Trustees runs through June 30, 2027.
