2023-10-11

SCC graduates at a recent commencement ceremonyThrough a federal grant for displaced workers, residents of the seven westernmost North Carolina Counties are eligible to receive free tuition as well as reimbursement for all education-related expenses at Southwestern Community College starting this fall.

Anyone who’s experienced a recent layoff or has been out of work for 13 weeks or longer may be eligible. To confirm eligibility, call 828.456.6061 or fill out the “Contact Us” form at WNCDislocatedWorkerGrant.com.

The WNC Dislocated Worker Grant, which is managed by the Southwestern Commission, is providing this financial assistance and can help determine eligibility for current and prospective SCC students who live in Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Swain, Clay, Graham or Cherokee Counties.

“Anyone who meets the residential and unemployment criteria can give us a call or visit our website,” said David Garrett, Southwestern Workforce Development Director for the Southwestern Commission. “Our goal is to make sure no obstacle stands in the way of anyone who wants to get back to work.”

On Oct. 24, which is the first day to register for the spring semester, representatives of the Southwestern Commission will be on SCC’s Jackson Campus to answer questions and help individuals determine if they qualify for this opportunity.
