Jackson County Early College students recently got hands-on experience in Southwestern Community College’s Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program.

As part of an honors project for their EC Biology course, students got to participate in a blood grouping lab activity.

“These skills help expose high school students to the sciences and give them the opportunity to learn about another program like MLT that they may not have realized existed,” said Andrea Kennedy, SCC’s MLT and phlebotomy program coordinator. “Students are often familiar with doctors, nurses and x-ray techs – typical medical staff, but they don’t see the lab technicians that are behind closed doors doing very skilled work with the patient’s blood and other samples.”

The lab activity gave students an opportunity to learn about antigens, antibodies, blood grouping and how these tests are performed to provide a safe blood transfusion for a patient.

For more information about SCC’s MLT or phlebotomy program, visit www.southwesterncc.edu or email Kennedy at andrea@southwesterncc.edu.

Deadline for application into the MLT program is Jan. 31.

SCC also offers a phlebotomy certification program, which teaches students how to properly collect blood samples in a one-semester program offered every fall semester. Application deadline is March 15.
