Jeff Cloer (center), a member of SCC’s board of trustees, recently made a scholarship donation to the SCC Foundation in honor of his mother, Ida Ramey Cloer. Pictured with Jeff Cloer are Dr. Don Tomas (left), president of SCC; and Brett Woods, director of the SCC Foundation.

Throughout his life, Jeff Cloer was always inspired by his mother’s dedication to the young children in her care as a director of Macon County’s HeadStart program and also as a kindergarten and first grade teacher.

To honor Ida Ramey Cloer’s devotion to her profession and the lives she touched, Jeff Cloer made a $1,200 donation to the Southwestern Community College Foundation to create the Ida Ramey Cloer Early Childhood Education Scholarship Fund.

The fund will be used to support an annual scholarship that will go to a deserving student entering SCC’s early childhood education program.

“She had such love and devotion for her "babies" as she called her students, and she had a deep passion to make sure their education was started on the right track,” recalled Jeff Cloer, a Franklin-based insurance agent who is a member of SCC’s board of trustees. “I could think of no better way to honor that love and devotion than to establish a scholarship in her honor to help others who share her passion for early childhood education.

“My hope is that this scholarship will ultimately  have a positive impact on the lives of children right here in our area,” he added. “I would also encourage others to reach out to the SCC Foundation to see just how easy and affordable it can be to help.”

Cloer’s gift is an example of one of several options the SCC Foundation offers for benefitting Southwestern students.

Other giving opportunities include the Student Success Campaign, an effort to establish an endowment of more than $1 million to be used primarily for student scholarships; the annual fund, which supports the work of the foundation and the mission of the college; and endowed named scholarships.

“We are thrilled Mr. Cloer has chosen to honor his mother in this very special way,” said Brett Woods, director of the SCC Foundation. “His gift will undoubtedly have a tremendous impact on a student’s life, and ultimately on our community as a whole.”
