MLT Program Earns Reaccreditation

2021-03-12

The Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program at Southwestern Community College recently received confirmation of its reaccreditation by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS).

The NAACLS provides external peer review and grants public recognition to education programs that meet established education standards in clinical laboratory science disciplines, such as SCC’s MLT program.

All accredited programs are required to submit a self-study and host a site visit in the cyclical review process. Accredited programs are eligible for a maximum award of ten years. These programs must either grant the associate degree or higher upon successful completion of the program.

“Students choosing to attend a NAACLS-accredited MLT program are given added assurance that the program meets stringent guidelines and adequately prepares students for national certification and employment in the field,” said Andrea Kennedy, SCC’s MLT Program Coordinator.

SCC underwent the reaccreditation process last fall. The site visitors provided praise for the design of the program and the dedication of the administration, faculty, clinical affiliates, and students in the process.

“The MLT program reaccreditation virtual site visit went flawlessly,” said Mitch Fischer, SCC’s Dean of Health Sciences. “The site visitors commented on the professionalism of our students and the high level of satisfaction students had for the education they received in that program.”

Andrea Kennedy added: “The success of our MLT program would not be possible without the dedicated professionals in the field being willing to partner with SCC to train students in the clinical setting. I am grateful for all of our clinical affiliates.”

The MLT program will take residence in SCC’s new Health Science building, scheduled to open this fall, and is currently taking applications from students. The program currently holds a 100-percent employment placement for its graduates over the last several years.
