New wave of nurses graduate

2024-07-03

To address the region’s nursing shortage, Southwestern Community College has recently sent out 36 new graduates into the workforce. Thirty-two of them will be staying in Western NC, providing care to local residents.

The graduates were honored in a pinning ceremony on May 9 at Southwestern’s Jackson Campus, making this graduating class one of the largest in SCC’s history.

“This graduating class is an exceptional group of students, and I am excited to see what their future holds,” said Amy Banner, Director of Nursing at SCC. “The majority of these students staying in our region gives me a surge of pride in knowing they will take care of our community.”

With the addition of the Practical Nursing program this past Spring semester, Southwestern is able to accept even more students interested in pursuing a degree in the field.

Banner added: “As our program grows, so does our community involvement and giving back.”

These grads will take their official licensure exams this summer so that they can begin working in area hospitals and other community healthcare facilities.
