Southwestern Community College’s educational opportunities department recently had nine basic skills instructors earn their CORE Instructional Certificate by completing the Hybrid Core Credential for Adult Education from Appalachian State University.

“The knowledge I gained from taking the Basic Skills CORE credentialing class was invaluable,” said Devonne Jimison, SCC’s coordinator of high school equivalency testing and literacy instructor. “It cemented and confirmed some things that I was already doing in my classes and it gave me some new, fresh ideas to implement also.”

The 36-hour hybrid credential class consists of seven courses that prepare instructors to provide quality education in basic skills programs.

Participants are trained in research and evidence-based methodologies, learning philosophies and the framework to support them.

“The CORE credential provided reminders that teaching adults is not the same as teaching high school students,” said Amy Russ, SCC’s developmental reading and English instructor. “Adults have different responsibilities and life situations and need a learning environment that meets their needs. I'm thankful for the opportunity to participate in such a program.”

SCC’s educational opportunities department consists of six distinct areas that work cooperatively to meet the needs of all student learning and offers students and community members connections to prepare for and succeed in college and in the workplace.
