SYLVA - Southwestern Community College recently honored this year’s highest-achieving students with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher.
In leiu of the college’s traditional Academic Awards Ceremony, SCC officials mailed certificates to all honorees at the end of the spring semester.
“While the public health response to the current pandemic prevented us from honoring our academic award recipients with a traditional ceremony, we still celebrate the significance of their accomplishments. Those receiving awards represent fewer than 10% of our enrolled students, so they are truly an elite group who exemplify academic excellence,” said Dr. Thom Brooks, Executive Vice President for Instruction and Student Services.
For their exceptional leadership and academic achievement, recipients of the Bob Scott Leadership Award include students of distinction Judd Gregory from Candler and Chris Padin from Marshall.
Jessie Collier from Franklin was awarded the Dallas Herring Achievement Award and student of distinction classification for embodying Dr. Herring’s philosophy of “taking people where they are and carrying them as far as they can go.”
Megan Addie Beck from Tuckasegee, a student of distinction, received the NCCCS Excellence Award for exemplary academic achievement.
Among the honorees were 37 students awarded “high honors” for achieving a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA. These students are designated below by an asterisk (*). Also among the honorees were 16 students recognized as students of distinction, as designated by an exclamation mark (!) in the list below:
