Student of the week: Amanda Stanfield

2020-03-04

A young woman stands outside of an old wooden building surrounded by nature. Our student of the week is Amanda Stanfield! She is expected to graduate in May 2021 with her Associate of Applied Science in Respiratory Therapy.

We asked Amanda a few questions about herself and what inspires her:

Who is one of your role models? How has that person helped with your educational journey?
When I was growing up, I was taught: “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” I have held true to it every day since I was a little girl, continuing to push myself to new heights to make my family proud. They have been my motivation throughout my life, as I continue to learn throughout my experiences and build on them.

What motivates you to excel at SCC in spite of difficult circumstances you may face?
Despite the difficult challenges I may face, my family continues to motivate me. I can always depend on my family for words of encouragement. They remind me that I have the opportunity of a lifetime to become the person I want to be in life as a respiratory therapist! I find myself having to balance school, work and a family. It takes great time management and organization skills to keep myself moving in the right direction. When life becomes stressful, I use that strength to push me even further, because I know in the future I will look back and see that all of my hard work and determination paid off. I also want to be an example for others in my community that it is not impossible to accomplish great things. I want to motivate them, so that they can continue to motivate the next generation.

What advice would you give to other students who face tough challenges?
Experiences in life are just as important as your formal education, if not more so. Outside of constant studying and working, you've got to make time for yourself. That's how you can be happy and have a great college experience when you have to write multiple papers or study for difficult exams. Take the time to experience new things and learn about yourself. A balanced life is a more healthy one, and it leads to better grades and a happier you!

We are so proud of everything you have accomplished so far, Amanda. Keep doing your best. We're glad to have you as a student.
