Associate of Arts Core/Degree Advising for Math Courses
ALL the following sequences require competency in arithmetic and basic algebra. Alg. CPT > 55 and Arithmetic CPT > 55 or SAT >500. Any additional pre-reqs are listed with each path below. Some general guidelines:
1. Students who need MAT 070 and/or 080, but are interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) need to get developmental courses underway immediately!
2. Those who place beyond MAT 080 should pick courses based on their interests. If the SAT or CPTs are high they may be able to place directly into trig or pre-calculus for example. Call math instructors re: direct placement into 162, 172, 175, 271.
3. The Undecided who need MAT 070 should take MAT 70 ® MAT 140 ® MAT 151
4. The Undecided who don’t need MAT 070 but would need MAT 080 should take:
MAT 140 ® MAT 151
141,142
Students who know or even think they may want to teach elementary or middle school should take MAT 141in the fall and MAT 142 in the spring. This has an MAT 080 pre-req. or Alg. CPT >75. We teach MAT 080 in summer for these students to prepare. This is a fall/spring sequence only.
Students who want to teach high school English, History, etc may also find this sequence enjoyable as it puts them in a cohort of future educators. It is NOT for future high school math, science or business teachers.
175,271,272
This is our heavy duty STEM path. (Pharmacy, math or hi school math/science teacher, engineering, science, etc.). Some non-WCU business schools will require brief or business calc, so those students may want to at least prepare to study calculus while @ SCC. So, yes, some of their electives must be math! Students who are not adequately prepared for 175 may take a more progressive route:
MAT 080 or Alg. CPT > 75 ® MAT 161® MAT 162 (currently online only) ® MAT 175 (pre-calc - fall only) ® MAT 271 (calc – spring only) ® MAT 271 (calc II – fall only)
171, 172
This pre-STEM sequence is taught for the surveying/engineering group and at night on the SCC campus and for Early College students on the Macon campus. It is a good choice for pre-science, pre-engineering students mentioned above who will need calculus at some point. This is a fall/spring sequence serving as an appropriate pre-req for Calculus in place of 175.
140 OR 151
WCU business majors must now take 151.
MAT 070 ® MAT 140 & 151
Students in social sciences, humanities, and pre-nursing/health fields may opt for one of the following routes: MAT 070 ® MAT 140 ® MAT 151
MAT 080 or Alg. CPT > 75 ® MAT 161 and MAT 151 (in either order)
If they have good CPT or SAT scores that place them out of 080 directly into stats and coll. alg., that is probably a better path. They MAY NOT take MAT 70 ® MAT 140 ® MAT 161
161,165
Finite Mathematics is a terminal applied course for which 161 is a pre-req. This sequence was designed to meet needs of the Early College program, but is an option for AA students in fields that will not require statistics or calculus. MAT 165 is spring only.
