Registering with Student Accessibility

How to Register with the office of Student Accessibility:

1. Apply to Southwestern Community College.

   Disclosing your disability in the application process is not required and will not impact your admission decision.

2. After receiving notice that you have been officially admitted as a Southwestern Community College student,
   1. Meet with your assigned advisor to register for classes, and
   2. Contact the Student Accessibility Coordinator at accessibility@southwesterncc.edu to begin the registration process, or follow the steps outlined below.

3. Complete a Student Accessibility Registration Form:

   When your form is received, the Student Accessibility Coordinator will follow up with you to schedule an intake appointment to discuss your disability-related needs, determine if additional documentation is required and explore what reasonable accommodations might be necessary to ensure full access.

4. Schedule an intake appointment with the Student Accessibility Coordinator:
   1. As part of the registration process, you will participate in an interactive meeting with the Student Accessibility Coordinator to discuss your needs. Appointments are available online or in person.
   2. During this meeting, the Student Accessibility Coordinator will determine if additional documentation from a medical, mental health or other professional is required and will provide instructions as needed.
   3. If accommodations are necessary, the Student Accessibility Coordinator will work with you to create an Accommodation Letter, which informs your instructors that you are a student with a documented disability who is eligible for the indicated accommodations.
5. If you have an Accommodation Letter, it is your responsibility to: 
   1. Approve your Accommodation Letter for each class online, which will generate an emailed copy to your instructor(s). 
   2. Communicate with instructor(s) to discuss, seek clarification, or address concerns about using your accommodation(s).
   3. Inform instructor(s) in a timely manner when requesting to use accommodations.
   4. Contact the Student Accessibility Coordinator if your accommodations are not being provided after following the above guidance.

Important Points:

• It is ultimately your decision as to whether or not you will request accommodations in a particular class.
• An instructor cannot legally provide accommodations without first receiving an official Accommodation Letter.
• An instructor must receive the accommodation letter in a timely manner to ensure the availability of any required additional resources.
• Accommodations cannot be provided retroactively.
• Students with disabilities are still expected to meet the academic requirements of any course in which they are enrolled.
• If you will need an accommodation for a college placement test, New Student Orientation or the TEAS test, contact the Student Accessibility Coordinator well in advance of your scheduled test or orientation event.
